The 2017 light show has grown to include over 150,000 lights that turned on and off by using 32 Light-O-Roma controllers, each of which contains 16 channels giving the display the ability to perform 640 different functions at a time. It takes 4 of these controllers to operate the large tree and its 13,000 lights. The most a single channel controls is 2,000+ LED icicle lights. The outline of the house is 100% LED this year and is complimented by the icicle lights that are also LED.
A laptop has been programmed to turn each set of lights on or off, twinkle, shimmer, fade up or fade down in precise synchronization to the music. Each song takes roughly 10 hours of programming for every minute of the song.
There are 13,000 lights on the large tree, 6,400 on each of the small trees and five arches that stretch 20 feet end to end and contain about 1,800 lights on each arch. Each deer has 300 white lights and 300 blue lights, and there are 400 lights on each of the 16 wreaths. Even the candles underneath the arches stand at 1 foot tall and contribute 100 lights per candle. And then there's the Abeling Tower! This tower stands 35 feet high to the top of the starburst. The starburst alone has 1,200 red lights and 1,200 white lights. Last year we added several new features to make the light show more enjoyable! We've included an additional 8 light poles with starbursts at the top and 3 starbursts behind the house. Each element contains 1600 lights within itself!
The Abeling Tower now changes from white to red and there is a new tower holding 3 starbursts behind the house that is 30 ft. high called the Comp Tower. You may be asking how we arrived at the names for those towers? It's a fairly simple idea, our neighbors, the Comps, gave us a tower as did our friends the Abelings...and those names had a nice ring to them.
Some changes have been made to improve your experience. We have removed a couple of the trees to make room for more cars to view the show from the road. The deer are now white and red instead of white and blue. and the wreaths along the roof as well as the treetops out front were changed to stars. A larger cross was placed at the highest point in the display and now has 2 colors, white and red.
For this year's show, we've freshened the display by changing thousands of lights that were 5 years old and fading quickly with new bulbs that have brighter colors. The arches now have the ability to change from white to red and we've added strobe lights on the ground, on the tower, and to the star at the top of the tower.
Every element of the display was handmade by Kevin Kolak except for the deer, which he still wrapped with strands of lights...twice! An amazing statistic about this display is that behind the lights, there are 100 feet of PVC in the arches, 192 feet in the large tree, and 204 feet total in the smaller trees. When all is said and done, there are close to 1,100 feet in the entire display. And don't forget about the extension cords. The Abeling tower, arches, and large tree all use between 700-800 feet for each feature, but the small trees use a whopping 2,000 feet! There are more than a mile of extension chords total in this display.
